Steve McQueen is in the driver’s seat in this pure adrenaline rush of speed cinema, which may just be the most authentic car-racing film ever made. Filmed on location in the French countryside during the actual 1970 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans—the annual car race in which drivers compete to cover the greatest distance over 24 hours—this almost documentary-like dramatization pits McQueen’s Porsche against rival Siegfried Rauch’s Ferrari in an engine-roaring endurance contest captured with thrilling, visceral immediacy.
