A Foreign Affair
Directed by Billy Wilder • 1948 • United States
Starring Jean Arthur, Marlene Dietrich, John Lund
Émigré director Billy Wilder returned to Europe for this strikingly sophisticated romance, which daringly combines comedy and geopolitics amid the ruins of postwar Berlin. Jean Arthur came out of retirement to play the prim, all-American congresswoman Phoebe Frost, who travels to Germany as part of a fact-finding mission and winds up falling for a young officer (John Lund), who, unbeknownst to her, is also involved with the woman she is investigating: Erika von Schlütow (a divine Marlene Dietrich), a cabaret singer suspected of being the mistress of a Nazi official.
