A Woman, A Part
Directed by Elisabeth Subrin • 2017 • United States
Starring Maggie Siff, Cara Seymour, John Ortiz
This penetrating debut feature from artist and filmmaker Elisabeth Subrin is both an arresting character study and a complex investigation of female friendship, the representation of women in media, and the difficulties of reckoning with change. Maggie Siff delivers a tour-de-force performance as Anna Baskin, an exhausted fortysomething actress who, burnt out and fed up with her successful but mind-numbing gig on a hit television show, abruptly quits the production. Returning to New York, where her career began, Anna reconnects with Kate (Cara Seymour) and Isaac (John Ortiz), former theater collaborators whom she turned her back on years ago. As Anna’s reappearance tears open old wounds and instigates fresh betrayals, she finds that restarting her life may not be so simple.
