Adua and Her Friends
Directed by Antonio Pietrangeli • 1960 • Italy
Starring Simone Signoret, Emmanuelle Riva, Marcello Mastroianni
After reformers close the legal brothels in Italy in 1958, four prostitutes fend for themselves by opening a restaurant. Unable to get a license for the trattoria themselves, they enlist a powerful fixer to help them. He agrees, on the condition that they conduct their old business upstairs and pay him an exorbitant monthly fee. Antonio Pietrangeli’s star-studded film straddles neorealism and commedia all’italiana and ranks among the under-recognized auteur’s great achievements.
