Etched in noir shadows and brought to life through striking rotoscope animation, this visually arresting adaptation of the graphic novels by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99 unfolds in Sudetenland, a mountainous region on the Czechoslovak-German border, in the summer of 1989, just as Communism is beginning to crumble. It’s there that Alois Nebel works as a train dispatcher. A loner who prefers old timetables to people, Nebel finds the desolation of the station tranquil—except when the fog rolls in and he begins to hallucinate, seeing ghosts and shadows from the region’s dark postwar past.
