Director Anthony Mann makes brilliant use of the CinemaScope frame in this intense, almost mythic psychological western. The final of the five groundbreaking westerns star James Stewart made with Mann, THE MAN FROM LARAMIE casts him as wagon master Will Lockhart, who, following an ambush that leaves his younger brother dead, sets out in search of the gun runners who supplied the Apaches with their deadly weapons. His quest for revenge leads him to Coronado, New Mexico, where he soon becomes embroiled in the perverse, Shakespearean power struggle engulfing the family of an aging cattle baron (Donald Crisp).
