In this rousing Technicolor adventure—the first of three non-western films James Stewart and Anthony Mann made together—ex-GI Steve Martin (Stewart) and his army buddy Johnny Gambi (Dan Duryea) arrive in the town of Port Felicity, Louisiana, on the Gulf Coast with the intention of drilling for oil. Before they can even place their drills in the clamps, the pair run afoul of local shrimp fishermen who consider the presence of oil speculators a threat to their livelihoods, setting up a clash that is further complicated when Steve falls in love with the daughter (Joanne Dru) of one of his rivals.
