Directed by Bimal Roy • 1963 • India
Starring Nutan, Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra
The final feature directed by Bimal Roy finds the filmmaker at the height of his artistry. In the British-ruled India of the 1930s, a young woman convicted of murder (Nutan) serves out a life sentence in prison, where she finds herself torn between the love of a compassionate doctor (Dharmendra) and the man from her past (Ashok Kumar) for whom she killed. Nutan’s restrained performance, the masterfully integrated musical sequences, and the striking cinematography of frequent Roy collaborator Kamal Bose come together to create a stirring exploration of guilt and redemption.
