Directed by Tom DiCillo • 1995 • United States
Starring Steve Buscemi, Catherine Keener, Dermot Mulroney
Having cut his teeth as a cinematographer for Jim Jarmusch and as the director of JOHNNY SUEDE (starring a then-unknown Brad Pitt), Tom DiCillo drew on his experiences in the film industry to craft this deliciously dark comedy, which stands as the ultimate satire of the 1990s indie film scene. Steve Buscemi plays the harried director Nick Reve, who gets a crash course in the perils of low-budget filmmaking as he battles against an avalanche of obstacles—including a pompous leading man (James LeGros) who has just had a disastrous one-night stand with his leading lady (Catherine Keener)—to make his first feature. Peter Dinklage makes his memorable film debut as a dwarf actor fed up with his clichéd casting.
