Tennessee Williams’s hot-and-heavy study of sexual repression gets a smoldering screen adaptation courtesy of the larger-than-life talents of Burt Lancaster and Italian superstar Anna Magnani. Making her Hollywood debut, Magnani plays Serafina, an Italian American widow living in a perpetual state of mourning, whose dreary life gets a jolt of excitement and drama when she meets a vigorous truck driver (Lancaster). Williams wrote the role of Serafina with Magnani in mind and she returned the favor with a volcanic, Oscar-winning performance.
