“Goodness, what beautiful diamonds.” “Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie.” The inimitable Mae West made her striking screen debut in this pre-Code drama about a speakeasy owner (George Raft) who attempts to shed his checkered past and crash into high society. Although West was cast in a supporting role, in the words of lead George Raft, “she stole everything but the cameras.” Given license to improvise her own lines, West injects all the wit and glamor that would soon make her a box-office sensation.
