Set during the 1940s wartime housing shortage, THE MORE THE MERRIER stars Arthur as Washington DC resident Connie Milligan, who does her part to help alleviate the situation by renting a room in her apartment to retired industrialist Benjamin Dingle (a scene-stealing, Academy Award–winning Coburn). Things get complicated when the mischievous Dingle promptly sublets half of his room to a young aircraft inventor (McCrea) and proceeds to play matchmaker to his young roommates.
