Starring Veronica Lake, Robert Preston, Laird Cregar
Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd (making a splash in his steely, star-making breakthrough performance) became one of the most iconic screen couples of the 1940s with this tough-as-nails noir classic, the first of four films they made together. After ice-cold assassin Philip Raven (Ladd) is double-crossed by duplicitous crime boss Willard Gates (Laird Cregar), he sets out to get even. Meanwhile, nightclub entertainer Ellen Graham (Lake) has her own reasons for wanting to bring down Gates. Together, she and the ruthless Raven form an uneasy alliance.
