Directed by Philip Dunne • 1961 • United States
Starring Elvis Presley, Hope Lange, Tuesday Weld
One of the overlooked highlights of Elvis Presley’s film career, this serious-minded drama (scripted by no less than Clifford Odets) casts him as Glenn Tyler, a troubled young man who, following a violent altercation, is ordered to begin counseling with the psychiatrist Irene Sperry (Hope Lange). Under her guidance, Tyler’s talent for writing blossoms—but small-town gossip and scandal threaten to derail the lives of both patient and doctor. Tuesday Weld, memorable as always, shines as Tyler’s flirtatious love interest.
