Outlandish, wickedly funny, and audaciously absurd, the films of Athina Rachel Tsangari take an almost anthropological view of the oddities of social behavior and relationships. It was while living in Austin, Texas—where she got her start working with Richard Linklater—that Tsangari made her first feature, THE SLOW BUSINESS OF GOING, a gonzo sci-fi travelogue about a globe-trotting cyborg. Upon returning to her native Greece, Tsangari established herself as one of the leaders of the country’s new wave of boundary-pushing cinema with ATTENBERG, an oddball coming-of-age melodrama/musical/nature documentary, and CHEVALIER, a sinister satire of male one-upmanship. Presented with a selection of her rarely seen shorts, these films blend ritual, performance art, and dark comedy into singular studies of the human animal.
