A story by Bengali writer Subodh Ghosh provides the basis for this pointed look at the impact of caste in Indian society, a blend of romance and socially conscious drama. After she is orphaned, Sujata (the luminous Nutan), an “untouchable” lower-caste girl, is taken in and raised by a well-off Brahmin family. When Adhir (Sunil Dutt), a young upper-caste man, falls in love with her, their star-crossed love is threatened by the prejudices of his family.
