Richard Roundtree reunites with director Gordon Parks for this sequel to their trendsetting Blaxploitation landmark SHAFT. New York City private detective John Shaft (Roundtree) gets a predawn phone call from panicked friend Cal Asby, only to arrive at Asby’s funeral home just before the building blows up—killing Asby and starting an underworld war. Searching for Asby’s killer, Shaft soon learns that his old pal ran a gambling racket, doing business with Harlem gang lord Bumpy Jonas (Moses Gunn). Now the racket’s cash is missing, rival gangs are battling for Asby’s turf, and only the street-smart, leather-jacketed Shaft is bad enough to stop the violence.
