Directed by Hal Hartley • 1997 • United States
Starring Thomas Jay Ryan, James Urbaniak, Parker Posey
Shy and clumsy garbage man Simon Grim (James Urbaniak) endures a colorless life with his depressed mom and promiscuous sister Fay (Parker Posey), until he’s befriended by their strange new tenant Henry Fool (Thomas Jay Ryan). Though depraved, conceited, and lazy, Henry does have a way with words, and he inspires his new friend to write a book-length poem that catapults the awkward garbage man to literary fame. Winner of the the best screenplay award at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, Hal Hartley’s bawdy, blackly comic take on the Faust legend was acclaimed as a career high point and marked the beginning of a trilogy that would continue with FAY GRIM and NED RIFLE.
