Directed by Matt Wolf • 2008 • United States
WILD COMBINATION is director Matt Wolf’s tender, visually absorbing portrait of the avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and disco producer Arthur Russell. Before his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, Russell left behind an extraordinary, genre-defying body of music that encompassed both the pleasures of pop and the transcendent possibilities of abstract art. Incorporating rare archival footage and commentary from Russell’s family, friends, and closest collaborators—including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg—Wolf brings to life the poignant, untold story of how a boy from rural Iowa became one of the legends of the downtown New York underground.
