Felonious Monks

Felonious Monks

2 Episodes

Monks, mystery, and brooding gothic atmosphere abound in two monastery-set works of expressionist horror from the dawn of Mexican cinema’s golden age. A haunted cloister awash in chiaroscuro shadows is the setting for the macabre thriller THE PHANTOM OF THE MONASTERY, an early triumph from Fernando de Fuentes, often cited as the most important Mexican director of the 1930s. Another master stylist, Juan Bustillo Oro (who wrote THE PHANTOM OF THE MONASTERY), directs DOS MONJES, an intense, vividly stylized melodrama that employs an audacious flashback structure to reveal the tragic connection between two monks.
