Directed by Stephen Frears • 1992 • United States
Starring Dustin Hoffman, Geena Davis, Andy Garcia
Stephen Frears offers a smart, subversive take on the screwball populism of directors like Frank Capra and Preston Sturges in this sly media satire. A plane carrying fifty-four passengers—including television reporter Gale Gayley (Geena Davis)—crash-lands right in front of rumpled, small-time crook Bernie LaPlante (Dustin Hoffman). The first person on the chaotic accident scene, Bernie spontaneously risks his life and saves a plane full of people. But sticking to his credo “keep a low profile,” Bernie disappears back into the night—only to see charming, telegenic impostor John Bubber (Andy Garcia) step forward to claim the $1 million reward, fawning media attention, and title of hero that should be his.
