Directed by Claudia Weill • 1980 • United States
Starring Jill Clayburgh, Michael Douglas, Charles Grodin
Director Claudia Weill’s follow-up to her ’70s New York classic GIRLFRIENDS is another winningly offbeat look at women searching for fulfillment in the big city. Mathematics professor Kate Gunzinger (Jill Clayburgh) has everything the modern woman is supposed to want: a successful career, financial security, and an active social and sex life—but somehow it’s not enough. While attending her father’s wedding in New York, she meets and falls in love with her new stepmother’s son (Michael Douglas), a former baseball player who sweeps her off her feet. Immediately, Kate is confronted with three problems: how to deal with her animosity toward her father’s new wife, what to do about her old boyfriend, and how to handle a relationship that borders on the taboo. Diana Ross contributes the film’s title track.
