This semi-autobiographical first feature by Xavier Dolan premiered at Cannes when the writer-director-star was only twenty years old. Hubert Minel (Dolan) is a sixteen-year-old Québécois living in suburban Montreal with his mother, Chantale (Anne Dorval). On his way out of the closet, Hubert struggles to communicate with Chantale, and their relationship grows increasingly tumultuous. A precocious coming-of-age story, I KILLED MY MOTHER announced the arrival of a bold new filmmaking voice.
