Hollywood iconoclast (and favorite of the French New Wave auteurs) Nicholas Ray brings plenty of punch to this offbeat noir musical based on the life of Dixie Davis, the lawyer for infamous mob boss Dutch Schultz who later turned informant. Lawyer Thomas Farrell (Robert Taylor) makes a nice living as the go-to defender for mobsters in 1930s Chicago. A relationship with chorus girl Vicki Gaye (Cyd Charisse in a rare dramatic role) convinces Farrell to end his association with the mob—but first he’ll have to reckon with ruthless kingpin Rico Angelo (Lee J. Cobb).
