A landmark in the evolution of horror cinema, F. W. Murnau's hauntingly atmospheric adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" stars an iconic Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws, who remains perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism ever imagined on screen. When Orlok summons a young real estate agent (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his mountain castle with the intention of purchasing a home, it soon becomes clear that the creepy Count has ulterior motives. Shooting on location in the Carpathian mountains, Murnau imbues his celebrated shots of nature and landscapes with a twisted, sinister quality that heightens the air of expressionistic dread.
