Starring Brian Donlevy, Veronica Lake, Alan Ladd
The second screen adaptation of the novel by Dashiell Hammett reteams popular pairing Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd for a hard-boiled tale of political intrigue, corruption, romance, and murder. Crooked political boss Paul Madvig (Brian Donlevy) incurs the wrath of the criminal underworld when he decides to go straight and support the reform candidate for governor—whose daughter Janet (Lake) he just so happens to be enamored with. When the gangsters respond to Madvig’s betrayal by framing him for murder, it’s up to Madvig’s right hand man and fixer Ed Beaumont (Alan Ladd) to get tough.
