Quill: The Life of a Guide Dog

Quill: The Life of a Guide Dog

Directed by Yoichi Sai • 2004 • Japan
Starring Kaoru Kobayashi, Kippei Shiina, Kazu Matsuda

Told with refreshingly unsentimental, documentary-like naturalism, this Japanese drama is an exquisitely touching look at the relationship between humans and animals. Quill is the yellow Labrador Retriever who we follow from the litter as he receives highly specialized training to become a guide dog and is then paired with the skeptical Watanabe Mitsuru (Kaoru Kobayashi), a blind journalist who believes he can get along just fine with only his cane. Gradually, through Quill’s great patience, gentleness, and skill, the loyal dog wins over the reluctant Watanabe.
