One of the most unforgettable performers in all of French cinema, Jean-Paul Belmondo (1933–2021) lent his natural insouciance and tough-guy visage to art-film touchstones and genre movies alike. Turning to acting after a stint as an amateur boxer, Belmondo proved the ideal face for the Nouvelle Vague revolution in BREATHLESS, with a screen presence every bit as intuitive and restless as Jean-Luc Godard’s direction. He went on to do some of his most memorable work with Godard and with the icy existentialist Jean-Pierre Melville, but became equally famous in France for his work in action flicks like THE PROFESSIONAL, for which he insisted on doing his own stunts. This selection from Belmondo’s incredible career captures the wide range and electric charisma of a star who inhabited the screen like nobody else.
