Clint Tollinger (Robert Mitchum) is a “town tamer,” a hired gun who, for a price, will eliminate any outlaws disturbing the peace of a frontier outpost. When his wife (Jan Sterling), exasperated by his violent lifestyle, leaves him, Tollinger rides off into the lawless town of Sheridan City in pursuit of her. As he tries to win back the woman he loves, Tollinger simultaneously faces the greatest gunfighting challenge of his career. Mitchum brings a finely shaded moral ambiguity to his portrayal of a notorious antihero, while debuting helmer (and longtime Orson Welles collaborator) Richard Wilson directs with a feeling for tension and atmosphere.
