The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye
Directed by Marie Losier • 2011 • United States
Starring Genesis P-Orridge, Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge
Filmed over the course of seven years, this tender portrait of industrial-music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and their late partner, erstwhile dominatrix Lady Jaye, is a love story unlike any another. Integrating intimate home movies, stylishly staged tableaux, and archival footage of P-Orridge’s legendary post-punk bands Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, THE BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE poignantly centers on the couple’s so-called pandrogeny project: a radical attempt to fuse their identities through body modification. Just as P-Orridge draws inspiration from the cut-up technique of the Dadaists and William Burroughs, so does Losier, whose playful visual style takes the form of an ecstatic, syncopated collage.
