The Barkleys of Broadway

The Barkleys of Broadway

Directed by Charles Walters • 1949 • United States
Starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Oscar Levant

Ten years after the last of their iconic films together at RKO, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers reunited one last time, this time at MGM and in full Technicolor. They play, appropriately enough, a pair of married, feuding musical-comedy stars who break up when she decides to try her luck in the legitimate theater . . . only to realize how much they need each other. Astaire and Rogers prove they’ve still got that old magic, particularly in an elegant ballroom reprise of George Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” which the pair first made famous in 1937’s SHALL WE DANCE.
