The Captain’s Paradise
Directed by Anthony Kimmins • 1953 • United Kingdom
Starring Alec Guinness, Yvonne De Carlo, Celia Johnson
Alec Guinness is at his peerless best in this frothy, soufflé-light comedy. He stars as Captain Henry St. James, a ship’s captain bouncing between ports in Gibraltar and North Africa and living a double life as husband to two women: one a straight-laced British housewife (Celia Johnson of BRIEF ENCOUNTER), the other a tempestuous Moroccan spitfire (Yvonne De Carlo). Though not produced at Ealing Studios, where Guinness was concurrently making some of the most beloved British comedies of the era, THE CAPTAIN’S PARADISE sparkles with the same mischievous wit and quintessentially English élan.
