One of director Hal Hartley’s most intriguingly experimental efforts is a cunning science-fiction satire that plays something like Godard’s ALPHAVILLE updated for our era. In a future New York City ruled by the Major Multimedia Monopoly, human beings are now public offerings on the stock exchange, and each time they have sex and remain unattached their value increases. Horrified that the ad agency he works for has helped usher MMM and their dehumanizing agenda into power, one man (Bill Sage) emerges as a secret leader of a revolution.
