The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter

Directed by Robert Ellis Miller • 1968 • United States
Starring Alan Arkin, Sondra Locke, Laurinda Barrett

When hearing-impaired John Singer (Alan Arkin) moves to a Southern town to be closer to a recently institutionalized friend who shares his condition, his profound compassion changes the lives of a small circle of struggling people in this supremely touching adaptation of the novel by Carson McCullers. Singer boards with a family desperately in need of his rent money, but fourteen-year-old Mick (Sondra Locke) resents giving up her room—until Singer introduces Mick to classical music, which he can feel but never hear. Meanwhile, Singer’s gentle influence saves an alcoholic (Stacy Keach) on a downward spiral and helps a dying doctor (Percy Rodriguez) reconcile his relationship with his daughter (Cicely Tyson). Now, can Singer’s empathy save the person most in need of redemption—himself?
