The Prisoner of Zenda

The Prisoner of Zenda

Directed by John Cromwell • 1937 • United States
Starring Ronald Colman, Madeleine Carroll, C. Aubrey Smith

The most acclaimed of the many film adaptations of Anthony Hope’s classic adventure novel brings together the star power of Ronald Colman, Madeleine Carroll, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and David Niven for a superbly mounted tale of political intrigue, mistaken identities, and swashbuckling heroics. While on vacation in a small Central European kingdom, Englishman Major Rassendyll (Colman) discovers that he is a dead ringer for that country’s crown prince (also Colman), who just so happens to be his distant cousin. When the prince is drugged and then kidnapped in a plot to block his coronation, Rassendyll is enlisted to double as the royal in a daring plot to save both king and country.
