The Red Pony
Directed by Lewis Milestone • 1949 • United States
Starring Myrna Loy, Robert Mitchum, Louis Calhern
John Steinbeck adapted his own classic novella for this sensitive tale of a young boy (Peter Miles) growing up in California’s Salinas Valley who, under the guidance of a venerable ranch hand (Robert Mitchum), learns hard truths about responsibility, life, and death when he is given a red pony to care for. The most expensive film up to then produced by mini-major studio Republic Pictures features a stirring score by composer Aaron Copland, who also arranged the music into an orchestral suite.
