The act of photography takes on disturbing dimensions in a warped animation and a rare combination of neorealism and fantasy. In A FAMILY PORTRAIT, animator Joseph Pierce employs a swirl of surreally transmogrifying images to reveal the dark undercurrents coursing through a family as they pose for a picture. The camera itself becomes a weapon in Roberto Rossellini’s eccentric fable THE MACHINE THAT KILLS BAD PEOPLE, in which a photographer is given the power to murder his perceived enemies with the simple click of a shutter.
