National trauma takes on supernatural form in this shivery fusion of searing historical drama, melancholy coming-of-age tale, and waking nightmare adapted from the hit horror video game. In 1962 Taiwan, during the repressive era of the White Terror when martial law was in force and dissident ideas were banned under threat of torture and death, Professor Chang (Fu Meng-po) defies authorities by running an underground literary club where he and his students learn about banned books and dream of freedom. When Chang mysteriously disappears, one of his students, Fang (Gingle Wang), goes in search of him, only to find herself plunged into a spectral realm haunted by ghosts, monsters, and memories of violence.
