In the wake of Brexit and Russia’s attack on Ukraine, filmmaker Christopher Roth teamed with pioneering film and cultural theorist Colin MacCabe to embark on what would become EUROPE ENDLESS, a trilogy exploring the increasingly elusive, complex idea of European identity. Taking the playfully discursive, intellectually omnivorous approach of Chris Marker’s cine-essays as its model, this first installment, THE SPECTRE OF EUROCOMMUNISM, explores the legacy of the 1970s leftist movement that sought to adapt communism to Western Europe, along the way touching on everything from the theories of Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci to the linguistic idiosyncrasies of James Joyce to the little-known tradition of Italian donkey racing.
