Women of Suriname

Through the stories of four women—Jetty, Sonja, Somai, and Sylvie—this incisive documentary explores the impact of Dutch colonialism and neocolonialism on their lives in Suriname, as well as in the Netherlands, where they face further discrimination. Made in the Sranan Tongo language in the wake of Suriname’s independence, WOMEN OF SURINAME draws on personal testimony to depict resistance to exploitation, marginalization, and poverty, while emphasizing the hope for a liberated future.
