Stanley Kubrick’s final magnum opus, an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s “Dream Story,” is one of the great late films—an unsettlingly enigmatic journey into erotic fantasy and illusion that has been endlessly analyzed and argued over for its tantalizing symbols and provocative themes. Stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were in the midst of their own much-publicized marriage when they delved fearlessly into the roles of a wealthy New York City couple who confront their innermost desires and anxieties on a dreamlike, Christmastime nocturnal odyssey that leads into the dark heart of a sinister conspiracy lurking beneath the veneer of high society.
