Bye Bye Africa

Bye Bye Africa

Directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun • 1999 • Chad, France
Starring Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Garba Issa, Aïcha Yelena

The first feature by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (and the first ever made in Chad) is an autobiographical semidocumentary in which the director plays a version of himself, an African filmmaker living in France who travels back to his native Chad, where he tries—and struggles—to make a film dedicated to his mother. What results is a thought-provoking, self-reflexive meditation on cinema, the state of contemporary Africa, and the challenges of making art in a country ravaged by war and colonialism.
