Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Directed by Ken Hughes • 1968 • United Kingdom
Starring Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries
This whimsical musical fantasy—based on the children’s novel by James Bond author Ian Fleming and coscripted by Roald Dahl—stars Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts, an eccentric inventor who creates a magical flying car that whisks him, his two children, and the remarkably named Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes) away on an extraordinary adventure involving pirates, life-size living dolls, and a memorably sinister child snatcher (played with relish by Robert Helpmann). Marvelous sets, imaginative contraptions, and the Sherman Brothers’ jaunty songs (including the Oscar-nominated title tune) come together in a perennial family favorite.
