Directed by Mary Stephen
Mary Stephen’s life and career span a remarkable distance of world geography and film history. Born in British Hong Kong and raised in Montreal, she traveled to Paris as a young cinephile and became one of Eric Rohmer’s closest collaborators, serving as his editor and co-composer for many years. She has since become a go-to editor for filmmakers both emerging and established, including Ann Hui. Yet her own work as a director remains relatively underseen. Brimming with discoveries, this collection brings together her newly restored experimental short films, alongside a mesmerizing, Marguerite Duras–inflected vision of unspoken sapphic desire in 1930s Shanghai (SHADES OF SILK) and a fascinating inquiry into her own complex family history (PALIMPSEST: THE STORY OF A NAME).
