Abel Ferrara reflects on his own bad-boy image with newfound insight and maturity in this semi-autobiographical portrait of an artist confronting the shadows of his turbulent past. Willem Dafoe delivers one of his great performances as Ferrara’s alter ego, Tommaso, an expat filmmaker living in Rome with his younger wife (Cristina Chiriac) and daughter. whose seemingly idyllic life conceals deep emotional cracks: the scars of drug addiction, romantic jealousy, and creative crisis. Suffused with a subtle hallucinatory quality that finds a surreal dimension in the everyday, TOMMASO is the work of an older, wiser provocateur facing his inner demons.
