Directed by Maurice Pialat • 1995 • France
Starring Gérard Depardieu, Géraldine Pailhas, Antoine Pialat
Maurice Pialat’s final film, this searing autobiographical drama continues his lacerating explorations of human relationships in all their messy, emotionally volatile complexity. Gérard (Gérard Depardieu) is the middle-aged, hopelessly self-centered womanizer who is forced to confront his failures—as a father, son, and lover—when his ex (Géraldine Pailhas), with whom he has a child (played by the director’s own son, Antoine Pialat), begins a new relationship and his father falls ill.
