Few filmmakers saw America as clearly as Robert Altman, who explored its mythic ideals, turbulent social upheavals, and messy contradictions with a keen, often critical eye. One of the most original of the maverick directors to emerge from the New American Cinema of the 1970s, Altman bucked Hollywood’s commercial demands to forge a distinctive style marked by overlapping and often improvised dialogue, a fast and loose approach to narrative, and a dynamic handling of ensemble casts in films like his breakout hit MASH, subversive western MCCABE & MRS. MILLER, and rollicking gambling comedy CALIFORNIA SPLIT In a career encompassing both spectacular popular successes and defiantly noncommercial, often misunderstood experiments, Altman emerged as a legend by remaining uncompromisingly true to his iconoclastic vision.
