Father Goose

Father Goose

Directed by Ralph Nelson • 1964 • United States
Starring Cary Grant, Leslie Caron, Trevor Howard

For his penultimate screen performance, Cary Grant plays slyly against his debonair image as Walter Eckland, a slovenly, hard-drinking loner stationed on a deserted Pacific island during World War II, assigned to keep watch for enemy planes. When a prim-and-proper French schoolteacher (Leslie Caron) and her seven female pupils wind up stranded on the island, the gruff Eckland finds himself unexpectedly won over by the girls. The breezy script won an Oscar for best original screenplay.
