Powerhouse performances from Jennifer Jason Leigh (who also produced and whose mother Barbara Turner wrote the screenplay) and Mare Winningham (in an Oscar-nominated turn) drive this intense, complex portrait of a troubled sibling bond. Sadie (Leigh) is an unstable, technically ragged punk singer whose struggles with alcohol and drugs keep her perpetually on the brink of self-destruction. Her sister Georgia (Winningham) is a talented, successful folk singer whose put-together life is the opposite of Sadie’s in every way. As Georgia attempts to save Sadie from herself, the latter’s bottomless pain threatens to engulf them both in a downward spiral.
