Into the West
Directed by Mike Newell • 1992 • Ireland, United Kingdom
Starring Gabriel Byrne, Ellen Barkin, Ciarán Fitzgerald
The rich folklore of the Irish Travellers provides the inspiration for this captivating fable about the relationship between two boys and a magical horse. While their widower father (Gabriel Byrne) was once known as the “King of Irish Travellers,” Tito (Rúaidhrí Conroy) and Ossie (Ciarán Fitzgerald) now live in a slum in Dublin. When the boys come into possession of an enchanted white horse known as Tír na nÓg—who is subsequently stolen by a greedy horse breeder—they are whisked away on a breathless adventure across the Emerald Isle. Written by Jim Sheridan (MY LEFT FOOT), INTO THE WEST is a rousing and poignant celebration of Irish tradition and mythology.
